Benefits of Resistance Training

By Jillian Rieckmann

There is nothing better then the feeling I get when I’m challenging all of my muscles, pumping weights at the gym. I feel so strong, so motivated, and like I could take on the world. Resistance Training isn’t just for men, in fact, my favorite days at the gym, are when all the men are gossiping with each other, while the women get sweaty, lifting heavy in the free weights zone.

Unfortunately, many women are afraid they will “bulk up” if they train with weights, however women don’t have enough testosterone to add bulk to our muscle. We will shape and tone our muscles, while maintaining or working towards a lean physique. Win/win! In addition to a fabulous looking body, there are numerous benefits to resistance training including…

• Fat burn (muscle burns more calories then fat)
• Self confidence (you know that saying, “if you look good, you feel good”)
• Bone density
• Physical strength
• Reduced risk of injury
• Reduction in back pain and arthritis
• Reduced risk of heart related disease and diabetes
• Preserves muscle mass in menopausal women
• Better sleep quality
• Improved balance
• Increased day to day functioning

etc.

So get in there, pick up those dumbbells, and challenge your body and mind as you work towards your goals and reap the rewards of all the added health benefits resistance training offers.
